The team at Farnsworth Family Orthodontics creates beautiful smiles for patients of all ages each day in our Carlsbad office. If you're in the Carlsbad area, whether you're looking for a brilliant, straight smile for yourself or a loved one, our team can help. There are more orthodontic treatment options available today than ever before, including both traditional metal braces and clear, ceramic braces. Both options are among the most effective tools at our disposal when it comes to achieving optimal tooth and jaw alignment.
Types of braces
At Farnsworth Family Orthodontics, we offer a variety of orthodontic treatment options to help you achieve a straight, healthy smile. Our experienced orthodontists will work with you to determine the best option based on your individual needs and preferences. Whether you're looking for a traditional option or something more discreet, we have you covered.
Metal Braces
Metal braces have been a popular option for many years, and they remain one of the most common types of braces used by orthodontists. Made of high-grade stainless steel, metal braces consist of brackets and archwires that work together to straighten your teeth. Today's metal braces are more comfortable and fun than ever before. You can even choose colored elastics to personalize your braces and express your unique style during treatment. For a more subtle look, clear or tooth-colored elastics are also available.
Ceramic Braces
Ceramic braces are similar to metal braces in function, but they have clear brackets made of a ceramic material that blends in with your teeth for a more discreet look. They're a great option for patients who want the benefits of traditional braces but prefer a more subtle appearance. While ceramic braces are durable, the brackets may be slightly larger and more prone to breakage than metal braces, so you may need to take extra care during treatment.
Getting to know the process
When you choose Farnsworth Family Orthodontics, we want you to feel confident that you're receiving personalized, advanced care. We begin your treatment by collecting digital x-rays, photos, and models of your mouth to create a customized plan that addresses your specific orthodontic needs. We take into account the specific movements that each tooth needs to make in order to achieve the best positioning and will determine the optimal placement of your brackets.
After your braces are attached, we insert a wire that applies pressure to the teeth requiring movement. Through a process called remodeling, the wire gradually moves your teeth into their proper positions by encouraging precise tooth movements. This process also involves minor changes in the bone surrounding your teeth's roots. As your braces apply pressure to your teeth, cells called osteoblasts and osteoclasts form around their roots. This works together with the wire to create negative pressure on one side of the tooth, where bone will be removed. On the other side of the tooth, the bone is reformed.
Since teeth have a natural tendency to drift back towards their old positions over time, we recommend the regular use of a retainer after your braces are removed. This helps to prevent natural drifting and keep teeth in their new and improved positions.
